Dubbers get Whirimako Black back on mic
Soul diva Whirimako Black has teamed up with Kiwi drum‘n’bass giants Salmonella Dub for a new single and video out this week.
She says she’s been largely absent from the recording studio since she came off her record label in 2009, so it was great to be back behind the microphone contributing to the band’s Return to Our Kowhai album.
“Being a singer is being a singer and running after funding is running after funding, and this Māori doesn’t know how to run after funding. I feel very blessed that I’ve been able to lay down four tracks with Salmonella Dub and recording – I didn’t have to whawhai (fight for) the funding,” she says.
Whirimako Black will join Salmonella Dub on a nationwide tour for the Return To Our Kowhai album, starting at the Rhythm and Alps festival in Wanaka on New Year’s Eve.
