Maori knowledge of the heavens is explored in a new facility in Dunedin.
The Tuhura Otago Community Trust Science Centre opens its doors to the public on Saturday under the kowowai of the Otago Museum.
Tahu Potiki from Ngai Tahu expects its displays on Maori cosmology will go down well with tourists seeking a glimpse into Maori culture which is different to what they might encounter in Rotorua or points north.
The New Zealand public will also enjoy it, although he anticipates resistance from science purists.
"That’s where the real differences are going to be more pronounced. It won't be in your regular visitors. It will be the people who find it a little challenging that we might be suggesting, god forbid, that there might be an indigenous knowledge system that can be treated equally with the prized western knowledge systems," Mr Potiki says.
