The Maori Party's Te Tai Hauauru candidate is calling for the establishment of a marine mammal sanctuary off the coast of South Taranaki.
Howie Tamati says species like the southern blue whale and the endangered Hector's dolphin range through the area where Trans Tasman Resources has just been given the go-ahead by the Environmental Protection Agency to process iron sand from the ocean floor.
He says it's an unproven process that could do huge damage to the environment.
"What's going to happen is it is going to flow out along the coastline of Te Tai Hauauru. This is just one spot these mining companies are looking at to mine the iron sands. It's huge in regards to what is going to happen to the ecology of that area," Mr Tamati says.
