Moa takes pounamu to world show
Wellington jeweler Neke Moa has been selected to attend the Schmuck festival of international contemporary jewellery in Munich next month with backing from Creative New Zealand.
Moa says she has always like making things with her hands, and she took a course in bone carving when she was 18.
But it was study at Whiterea Polytechnic that gave her an insight into jewellery as a contemporary art.
"You can basically make jewellery out of any materials. It's really ideas and cencepts-based so I learned a lot about coming up with ideas, research, and developing those ideas into finished pieces," Moa says.
She will be joined at Schmuck by another Wellington jeweler, Rebecca Bliss.
Creative New Zealand is also supporting textile artists Chelsea Johnson and Emma Creighton and graphic designers Melanie Bosma and Witehira Johnson to attend Talente, which along with Schmuck is part of the annual International Trade Fair for the Skilled Trades in Munich.
