First home grant loss landlords’ gain
Greens’ housing spokesperson Teanau Tuiono says instead of scrapping the first home buyers grant scheme, the Government should cut back on its tax cuts for the rich.
Housing Minister Chris Bishop says $140 million of the savings from scrapping the $10,000 grants would go to community housing providers to provide 1500 social housing places.
Mr Tuiono says the grants have helped a lot of people get into their first home.
“This Government is giving tax cuts to landlords, $2.9 billion worth of tax cuts for landlords, so if you are looking for places to save money, look there,” he says.
Mr Tuiono says with four children he has seen first hand the challenges to scraping together a deposit for a home and how the gran scheme helped.
