One of Northland’s most iconic summer destinations is searching for a new campground operator, with Kaipara District Council opening a procurement process for the management of Pine Beach Campground at Kai Iwi Lakes for the 2026–27 summer season.
The opportunity offers more than just a seasonal contract. The successful contractor or operator will live on-site overlooking the internationally renowned dune lakes while managing one of Aotearoa’s most popular holiday destinations during its busiest time of the year.
Located within the Taharoa Domain, Kai Iwi Lakes attracts thousands of visitors every summer who come to swim, camp, fish and enjoy the crystal-clear freshwater lakes surrounded by native forest. The campground plays a central role in welcoming visitors from across New Zealand and overseas.
The contract includes responsibility for the day-to-day operation of Pine Beach Campground, overseeing campsite occupancy, welcoming guests, maintaining facilities and helping ensure visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience throughout the peak holiday period. On-site accommodation is included as part of the contract, allowing the successful operator to live and work beside the lakes during summer.
Kaipara District Council says it is looking for more than a campground manager. The successful applicant will also serve as an ambassador for Kai Iwi Lakes, helping create a positive experience for visitors and showcasing one of Te Tai Tokerau’s most treasured natural attractions.
For Māori, Kai Iwi Lakes holds significant cultural and environmental importance. The lakes sit within the Taharoa Domain and are part of a landscape with deep connections to local iwi and hapū. Protecting the area’s ecological values while supporting sustainable tourism reflects the principles of kaitiakitanga, balancing recreation with the long-term care of this unique freshwater environment.
The procurement opportunity also highlights the growing importance of tourism and visitor management across Northland, where seasonal operators play a key role in supporting local economies and ensuring visitors enjoy high-quality experiences while respecting the natural environment.
Council is encouraging experienced operators, hospitality providers and contractors interested in lifestyle-based work to submit proposals before the closing date of 31 August 2026. Successful applicants will have the chance to spend summer living alongside one of New Zealand’s most picturesque lake systems while contributing to the ongoing success of a destination enjoyed by generations of Kiwi families.
