Meridian Energy has received resource consent to develop a 110-megawatt solar farm near Morrinsville, marking another significant step in New Zealand’s transition towards renewable electricity and greater energy security.

The Morrinsville Solar Farm, planned for a 134-hectare site around two kilometres east of Morrinsville in the Waikato, will feature approximately 230,000 solar panels capable of generating around 200 gigawatt-hours of electricity each year—enough to power more than 25,000 average New Zealand homes.

The consent also provides for the future installation of a battery energy storage system, allowing electricity generated during the day to be stored and released when demand is highest. Energy storage is increasingly seen as a critical component of New Zealand’s renewable electricity network, helping improve reliability as more generation comes from solar and wind.

Meridian says the project forms part of its wider commitment to invest around NZ$3 billion in new renewable generation by 2030, as electricity demand continues to grow through population growth, business investment and the electrification of transport and industry.

If the project receives final investment approval from Meridian’s board, construction could begin in 2028, creating more than 100 local construction jobs while injecting tens of millions of dollars into the Waikato economy. Once operational, the solar farm is expected to support several permanent roles.

The development has also been designed to retain agricultural use of the land. Sheep will continue grazing beneath the solar panels, allowing farming and electricity generation to operate together while new native riparian planting and habitat restoration are planned to improve biodiversity across the site. Screen planting will also be established to reduce visual impacts for neighbouring properties.

For Māori, the rapid expansion of renewable energy projects presents both opportunities and challenges. Solar developments can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening climate resilience, but they also highlight the importance of meaningful engagement with iwi and hapū, protection of culturally significant landscapes and waterways, and ensuring developments align with the principles of kaitiakitanga.

As New Zealand works towards a more resilient electricity system, large-scale renewable projects such as Morrinsville will play an increasingly important role in reducing reliance on fossil fuels while supporting future economic growth. The challenge will be ensuring that the benefits of the energy transition are shared with local communities and developed in partnership with tangata whenua.

The Morrinsville project joins a growing pipeline of renewable energy developments across Aotearoa, reflecting the country’s continued investment in cleaner electricity generation to meet future demand while supporting New Zealand’s climate commitments.
