Labour has announced a new election policy package aimed at recognising the contribution of volunteer firefighters while reducing electricity costs for businesses, saying the measures are designed to strengthen regional communities and ease cost-of-living pressures.
The party says a Labour Government would introduce greater support for New Zealand’s 12,000 volunteer firefighters, who make up the majority of Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s frontline workforce. The proposal includes financial recognition for volunteers and measures intended to better support recruitment and retention in communities that rely heavily on volunteer brigades.
Volunteer firefighters respond to a wide range of emergencies, including house fires, vegetation fires, road crashes, medical incidents and severe weather events. In many rural and provincial communities, volunteer brigades are the primary emergency response service.
Alongside its emergency services announcement, Labour has pledged to reduce electricity costs for businesses by expanding access to cheaper renewable energy. The party says its plan would help businesses invest in solar generation and lower long-term operating costs through new financing options and incentives designed to encourage greater uptake of renewable technology.
The proposal builds on Labour’s previously announced SolarSaver policy, which includes government-backed finance, grants and support for community energy initiatives. The party argues that increasing local renewable generation will improve energy affordability while strengthening New Zealand’s electricity resilience.
The announcement comes as energy prices remain a significant issue for households and businesses. The Government has recently introduced new time-of-use electricity pricing rules aimed at helping consumers reduce power bills by shifting electricity use to off-peak periods, while also pursuing wider reforms to improve competition and energy security.
Labour says supporting volunteer firefighters and lowering business energy costs are both investments in resilient communities, particularly in regional New Zealand where volunteers play a critical role in emergency response and where businesses continue to face pressure from higher operating costs.
The policy is expected to form part of Labour’s broader election campaign as political parties continue unveiling their plans ahead of the 2026 General Election.
