Alofi’ana Khan-Pereira marked his return from injury with two tries as the New Zealand Warriors powered to a convincing 32-6 victory over the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
The flying winger delivered an immediate reminder of his finishing ability, crossing twice as the Warriors dominated the Round 19 contest and strengthened their position in the NRL premiership race.
Khan-Pereira had been sidelined with a thigh injury but was cleared to return alongside co-captain James Fisher-Harris and forward Leka Halasima. His comeback added pace and attacking danger to a Warriors side determined to respond strongly during the second half of the season.
The Warriors established control through their powerful forward pack, quick play-the-balls and disciplined defence. Sustained pressure created space on the edges, allowing Khan-Pereira to take advantage and continue his impressive try-scoring record since joining the Auckland-based club.
The visitors repeatedly broke through the Tigers’ defensive line, finishing the match with 11 line breaks while forcing the home side into 42 missed tackles. Despite completing every set during the opening half, the Tigers struggled to turn possession into meaningful attacking opportunities.
The Warriors’ defensive effort was just as important as their attacking performance. They restricted the Tigers to a single converted try and shut down several promising attacking movements before they could develop.
The loss continued a difficult period for Wests Tigers, who have now suffered eight defeats in their past 10 matches. Their hopes of reaching the finals are fading as the club remains in the lower half of the competition standings.
Injuries added to the Tigers’ problems, with Starford To’a leaving the match because of a groin issue. The result also came during a turbulent week for the club following confirmation that playmaker Jarome Luai will depart at the end of the season.
For the Warriors, the comprehensive victory provided another indication of their premiership credentials. The return of several frontline players has increased competition across the squad and strengthened their depth heading into the closing rounds of the regular season.
Khan-Pereira’s double was the highlight of an impressive team performance, with the winger once again demonstrating why he has become one of the competition’s most dangerous attacking weapons.
The Warriors will now look to carry that momentum into their next match as they continue their push toward the NRL finals.
