The Southern Steel have continued their strong run of form, claiming a third consecutive victory with a composed 54-47 win over the Central Pulse in Invercargill.

Backed by a vocal home crowd, the Steel also reclaimed the Robyn Broughton Legacy Trophy, honouring one of netball’s most respected figures whose influence spans both franchises.

The result was built through a dominant middle period, where the Steel’s defensive pressure and clinical finishing created a decisive buffer. Leading by 12 heading into the final quarter, the home side held firm despite a late push from the Pulse.

The contest began evenly, with both teams trading goals in an entertaining opening quarter. The Steel edged ahead 14-13 at the first break, before lifting their intensity through the second stanza.

A suffocating defensive effort from Khanye-Lii Munro-Nonoa and Carsy Stythe disrupted the Pulse attack, while captain Kimiora Poi’s speed and anticipation proved pivotal through the midcourt. The Steel capitalised on turnovers, converting opportunities through accurate shooting from Aliyah Dunn, who delivered a standout performance under the hoop.

By halftime, the Steel had established control with a 28-20 lead, continuing to apply pressure through the third quarter. The Pulse struggled to find rhythm against the Steel’s relentless defensive wall, with missed chances compounding their frustration.

Strong combinations between Poi and Serina Daunakamakama ensured smooth ball movement, feeding shooters Dunn and Georgia Heffernan, who maintained the scoreboard advantage.

Despite a more competitive final quarter and a late surge from the Pulse, the Steel’s earlier dominance proved decisive. Even the loss of Dunn to injury in the closing stages could not derail the home side’s momentum.

The victory reinforces the Steel’s credentials this season, combining defensive grit with attacking efficiency as they build momentum in the ANZ Premiership.
