The Mana Wāhine Kaupapa Inquiry will return to Te Tai Tokerau next week, with hearings set down at Otiria Marae as part of its ongoing examination into the Crown’s treatment of Māori women.

The Wai 2700 inquiry, presided over by Judge Reeves, will sit from May 4 to May 8, continuing its focus on breaches of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and their impacts on the rights, status and wellbeing of wāhine Māori.

The inquiry is one of the most significant kaupapa before the Waitangi Tribunal, exploring the long-standing effects of colonisation across social, cultural, economic and political spheres. It provides a platform for wāhine Māori to present evidence, share lived experiences and seek recognition and redress.

Issues under examination include the historical exclusion of Māori women from land ownership, leadership roles and decision-making, and how those impacts continue to be felt across generations.

Holding the hearing at Otiria Marae reflects the importance of grounding the process in te ao Māori, with proceedings guided by tikanga and centred on the voices of whānau, hapū and iwi.

The week-long hearing is expected to bring together claimants, legal representatives, kaumātua, kuia and members of the wider community, while also offering the public an opportunity to engage with the inquiry.

The Mana Wāhine Inquiry continues to highlight the aspirations of wāhine Māori for equity, justice and tino rangatiratanga, as the Tribunal works through evidence from across the motu.
