Progress is being made on legislation aimed at tackling modern slavery, after Labour forced action to advance the bill through Parliament.
The Modern Slavery Bill, jointly backed by MPs from across the political spectrum, is designed to strengthen New Zealand’s response to exploitation, human trafficking and forced labour.
The legislation would require large organisations to report on how they identify and address risks of modern slavery within their operations and supply chains, as well as outline steps taken to prevent and respond to those risks.
It also proposes the creation of a public register of these reports, alongside penalties for companies that fail to meet reporting requirements.
The bill has gained momentum after Labour pushed for it to be progressed, highlighting growing concern about modern slavery both within Aotearoa and globally.
Supporters say the legislation will bring New Zealand into line with international partners already requiring similar transparency measures, including the United Kingdom and Australia.
Modern slavery can include forced labour, human trafficking and exploitation, often hidden within complex global supply chains.
Advocates argue the bill is a crucial step toward greater accountability, improved protections for workers and stronger support systems for victims.
If passed, the legislation would move through the select committee process, allowing for public submissions before becoming law, with the aim of strengthening oversight and prevention measures nationwide.
The progress of the bill signals increasing political will to address exploitation and ensure businesses operating in Aotearoa are held to higher standards.
