We zig when others zag.
That’s the strategy employed by Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki as it seeks to grow its treaty settlement putea.
Chief executive Tama Potaka says while some housing developers are starting to struggle, Ngāi Tai is pushing ahead, after successful projects in Waterview and Pukekohe.
It’s now doing earthworks for a joint venture development of up to 400 homes at Middlemore, and it will have a stake in the redevelopment of the Unitec campus at Owairaka by 13 Tāmaki Makaurau iwi.
It’s also entered tourism in a partnership with Explore Boats, offering whale and dolphin-watching in Tikapa Moana as well as the ferry service to Tiritiri Mātangi.
In another partnership, Ngāi Tai has laid its first mussel lines between Ponui Island and Coromandel.
