Two of the greatest names in international netball will be honoured through a new award recognising the standout player in the fierce trans-Tasman rivalry between the Silver Ferns and Australian Diamonds.

Netball New Zealand and Netball Australia have announced the introduction of the Plummer-Aitken Medal, named after legendary coaches Dame Ruth Aitken and Norma Plummer AM.

The medal will be awarded for the first time during the 2026 Constellation Cup series, recognising the player who makes the greatest contribution across the entire competition.

The announcement celebrates two women whose influence on international netball has spanned decades, from their achievements as players to their extraordinary coaching careers.

A Rivalry Separated by Just One Victory

Few coaching rivalries in international sport have been as closely contested as the battles between Dame Ruth Aitken and Norma Plummer.

Between 2004 and 2011, the pair faced each other 35 times as national coaches.

Australia claimed 18 victories, while New Zealand secured 17, demonstrating just how evenly matched the two teams were throughout their era.

Both women represented their countries at the highest level, won Netball World Cup titles as players and coaches, and were inducted into their respective national Netball Halls of Fame.

They were also leading their national teams when the Constellation Cup trophy was introduced in 2010.

Their rivalry helped shape one of the most competitive international sporting contests between Aotearoa and Australia.

Dame Ruth Aitken’s Extraordinary Legacy

Dame Ruth Aitken remains one of the most influential figures in New Zealand netball history.

As Silver Ferns coach, she helped establish a culture of high performance, resilience and international competitiveness.

Her coaching career included leading the Silver Ferns to the 2003 Netball World Cup title and the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Beyond the trophies, Aitken played an important role in developing generations of players and strengthening New Zealand’s reputation as a powerhouse of world netball.

She says sharing the new medal with her former Australian rival is a special honour, reflecting both the competitive nature of their battles and the mutual respect they developed over many years.

Norma Plummer’s Impact on Australian Netball

Norma Plummer is equally celebrated across the Tasman.

A former Australian representative and World Cup-winning coach, Plummer helped build the Diamonds into one of the most formidable teams in international netball.

Her leadership, tactical expertise and competitive determination contributed to Australia’s sustained success on the world stage.

Despite the intensity of her rivalry with Aitken, Plummer has consistently acknowledged the respect between the two coaches.

The new medal recognises not only their sporting achievements but also their contribution to developing international netball.

Celebrating Excellence Across the Constellation Cup

Unlike an award recognising an individual match performance, the Plummer-Aitken Medal will honour the most valuable player across the entire Constellation Cup series.

That means consistency, leadership and the ability to influence major moments throughout the competition will be central to the recognition.

Netball Australia Chair Liz Ellis says the award is a fitting tribute to two coaches whose dedication and expertise helped define an era of international netball.

Netball New Zealand Chief Executive Jennah Wootten says the medal reflects the competitive spirit, mutual respect and sporting excellence that have become synonymous with the Constellation Cup.

The organisations hope the award will inspire future generations of players to pursue excellence at the highest level.

Silver Ferns and Diamonds Prepare for Another Showdown

The introduction of the medal adds another dimension to the 2026 Constellation Cup, with players from both countries now competing for individual recognition alongside the prestigious team trophy.

The inaugural recipient will be announced following the final match of the series at Melbourne’s John Cain Arena on Wednesday, October 28.

The match is scheduled to begin at 9.30pm New Zealand time.

For the Silver Ferns, the series represents another opportunity to test themselves against their greatest international rivals.

For both countries, the new medal provides a lasting reminder of the women who helped build the rivalry into one of world netball’s most compelling contests.

With just one victory separating Dame Ruth Aitken and Norma Plummer across 35 historic coaching encounters, the Plummer-Aitken Medal is a fitting tribute to two legends whose influence continues to shape netball on both sides of the Tasman.
