With Aotearoa heading to the polls on Saturday 7 November, the Electoral Commission has confirmed more than 2,300 voting places nationwide, including over 220 Whare Pōti Māori, as voters are reminded of a crucial change to enrolment rules for this year’s general election.

Advance voting begins on Monday 26 October, giving New Zealanders nearly two weeks to cast their votes before election day.

However, unlike previous elections, voters will not be able to enrol at a voting place during the voting period.

That means Sunday 25 October is the final day to enrol or update enrolment details, making it particularly important for Māori voters, rangatahi and anyone who has recently moved to check their information before the deadline.

More Than 220 Whare Pōti Māori Across Aotearoa

The Electoral Commission has confirmed that more than 220 Whare Pōti Māori will operate across the country, providing voting opportunities in culturally familiar community settings.

These include marae, kura, wānanga and other community facilities.

Of particular significance is the establishment of 67 bilingual voting places, where voters can complete the voting process in either te reo Māori or English.

The initiative is designed to make participation more accessible for Māori voters and strengthen the presence of te reo Māori within the democratic process.

Whare Pōti Māori also provide an opportunity for voting to take place in settings connected to Māori communities, rather than relying solely on traditional public facilities.

For Māori voters, the availability of these locations represents an important part of improving access and participation.

Enrolment Deadline: 25 October

One of the biggest changes for Election 2026 concerns enrolment.

Voters must be enrolled before voting begins and will no longer be able to enrol at a voting place.

The final deadline to enrol or update personal details is Sunday 25 October, the day before advance voting opens.

The change means anyone who has recently turned 18, moved house, changed their name or needs to update their enrolment information should act before the deadline.

For Māori voters, checking enrolment details is particularly important to ensure they are registered correctly and know which electorate they are eligible to vote in.

Those enrolled in a Māori electorate will be able to vote for candidates contesting that electorate, while voters on the general roll will vote in their respective general electorates.

Both groups receive a party vote, which helps determine the overall composition of Parliament.

Accessibility a Major Focus

The Electoral Commission has also confirmed significant accessibility arrangements for this year’s election.

Of the more than 2,300 voting places, 1,679 will be fully accessible.

Selected locations will provide New Zealand Sign Language interpreters, while others will offer quiet voting times for people who may find busy voting environments difficult.

These measures are intended to support disabled voters, older people and others who may require additional assistance.

Voters are encouraged to check the accessibility features of individual voting places before travelling.

Information about voting locations, opening hours and available support services is accessible through the Electoral Commission’s website.

Advance Voting Begins 26 October

Advance voting opens on Monday 26 October and continues ahead of election day on Saturday 7 November.

Voters do not need to wait until election day to cast their ballots and can use an advance voting location that suits their circumstances.

The Electoral Commission is encouraging people to plan ahead, particularly those balancing work, study, whānau responsibilities or travel.

For rangatahi voting for the first time, advance voting provides an opportunity to participate before the busiest period of the election.

The Commission’s online voting place finder allows voters to identify nearby locations and check their opening hours.

Māori Voters Encouraged to Check Their Details Now

With the election campaign entering its final weeks, the focus is shifting from political promises and candidate debates to ensuring eligible voters are ready to participate.

The availability of Whare Pōti Māori, bilingual voting services and additional accessibility support is intended to make voting more convenient for communities across the motu.

However, the enrolment deadline remains a critical consideration.

Anyone who is uncertain about their enrolment status should check their details as soon as possible.

Key election dates:

  • Sunday 25 October: Final day to enrol or update enrolment details.
  • Monday 26 October: Advance voting begins.
  • Saturday 7 November: General election day.

Voters can check their enrolment, update their details and find their nearest voting place through the Electoral Commission’s official website.
