Former All Blacks captain Taine Randell has traded the rugby field for the political campaign trail, standing for New Zealand First in Tukituki as Election 2026 enters its final weeks.
The former international rugby star is campaigning across Hawke’s Bay, in the heart of Kahungunu country, meeting voters and hearing firsthand about the issues affecting local communities, businesses and whānau.
Randell, who captained the All Blacks during a distinguished international career, is bringing his leadership experience and public profile into the political arena as he seeks to establish himself as a candidate beyond his sporting achievements.
His campaign has also taken an increasingly digital approach, with TikTok videos offering a lighter look at life on the hustings and providing another way to connect with voters, particularly younger audiences.
And there has been some light-hearted commentary at Radio Waatea, where Randell has been identified as a possible lookalike of the station’s own Editor-in-Chief, Matthew Tukaki, adding a little humour to an otherwise serious election campaign.
But behind the social media appearances are substantial questions about the future of Tukituki, including the cost of living, employment, regional economic development and the opportunities available to families across Hawke’s Bay.
Randell is also placed ninth on New Zealand First’s 2026 party list, giving him a potential pathway into Parliament through the party vote even if he does not win the electorate.
His candidacy comes as New Zealand First seeks to strengthen its representation in Parliament, with the party campaigning on regional development, economic policy and its record in government.
For Randell, the transition from leading the All Blacks to seeking political office presents a different kind of leadership challenge, one that involves earning the confidence of voters rather than directing a team on the rugby field.
With election day approaching on 7 November, attention will turn to whether his sporting reputation, campaign engagement and New Zealand First’s wider support can translate into a place in the next Parliament.
