Te Pāti Māori has unveiled a $200 million Mana Takatāpui Policy, promising a new independent Takatāpui-governed Commission with control over dedicated funding if the party is in a position to implement the policy after the election.
The policy commits $200 million over three years across healthcare, mental health, housing, safety, education and culture, alongside direct investment in Takatāpui-led organisations.
Co-leader Rawiri Waititi says the central principle is that decisions affecting Takatāpui should be made with Takatāpui leadership rather than through another government advisory body.
The proposed Commission would have independent authority over ring-fenced Takatāpui funding, shifting decision-making over services and investment towards Takatāpui communities themselves.
The package includes gender-affirming kaupapa Māori healthcare, Takatāpui-led mental health and suicide prevention services, safer housing pathways, measures addressing violence and hate, stronger cultural connections and safer pathways through education.
Waititi says Te Pāti Māori sees the proposal as an expression of rangatiratanga, with Takatāpui organisations given both the resources and authority to develop services around the needs of their own communities.
The announcement adds another major social policy commitment to Te Pāti Māori’s 2026 election platform, with the party putting Māori control over funding and decision-making at the centre of its approach.
