Warriors fans heading to Eden Park on Sunday have another reason to celebrate, with free travel on Auckland trains and buses and the City Rail Link giving thousands of supporters a new way to reach the big game.
The Warriors take on the Newcastle Knights at Eden Park on Sunday 20 September, with kick-off at 6.05pm and around 45,000 fans expected.
Match-day ticket holders can travel free on trains and buses from 1pm until the end of services on Sunday, simply by showing their ticket to station staff or bus drivers.
For the first time, the City Rail Link means fans travelling from East Auckland and Onehunga can get directly to Kingsland without changing trains, giving supporters an early taste of how the new rail network will handle major events across Tāmaki Makaurau.
East-West and Onehunga-West services will drop fans at Kingsland Station, directly across the road from Eden Park. East-West trains will also stop at city centre stations including the new Te Waihorotiu Station, allowing passengers from other services to transfer.
Extra buses will operate, including special event services approximately every 10 minutes from Albany Bus Station from 3pm along the Northern Busway.
Fans are being encouraged to arrive early, with the Outer Oval fan zone opening at 1pm and stadium gates opening at 4.15pm. Music, face painting, sign making, food and entertainment will build the atmosphere ahead of kick-off, with post-match celebrations also planned.
There will be some changes after the game. Fans travelling west towards Swanson will need to walk to Morningside Station, while Kingsland will concentrate on moving passengers east and south. Special buses will also operate to the North Shore and central city.
Because the finals match was confirmed at short notice, fewer additional event trains will operate than would normally be provided for a major Eden Park event. Fans are being urged to allow extra time, check the AT Mobile app or Journey Planner and follow staff directions after the final whistle.
So get the jerseys out, get to Eden Park early and get aboard the Wahs Train — because on Sunday, the road to the finals comes with a free ride.
