It has been another massive weekend of Hākinakina, with triumph, heartbreak and high-pressure international competition dominating the sporting headlines.
The Black Ferns have overcome France, Northland has kept the Ranfurly Shield in Whangārei, while both Warriors sides have endured painful finals results. The All Blacks have also been left hurting after South Africa secured their series 3-1, while the White Sox have opened their Softball World Cup campaign with a nail-biting defeat.
And in Formula One, Liam Lawson has again shown his pace on the world stage, qualifying inside the top 10 in Madrid.

BLACK FERNS DEFENCE POWERS VICTORY OVER FRANCE
The Black Ferns have shown that championship rugby is not always about spectacular attack, producing a huge defensive effort to overcome France.
New Zealand was forced to absorb sustained French pressure, with defence becoming the defining feature of the contest.
The victory adds another significant result for the Black Ferns against one of the strongest sides in international women’s rugby and demonstrated their ability to stay composed when placed under pressure.
It was a performance built around resilience, discipline and refusing to allow France to turn possession into points.
WARRIORS STUNNED BY DOLPHINS
The Warriors now face the long road through the NRL playoffs after the Dolphins defeated them 26-16 in their qualifying final at Mount Smart.
Victory would have given the Warriors a week off and a home preliminary final.
Instead, their premiership campaign now moves into sudden-death territory.
The result was a major disappointment for a sold-out Auckland crowd and the enormous Warriors support base across Aotearoa, but the season is not over.
The equation from here is considerably simpler.
Win and keep the dream alive. Lose and 2026 is finished.
NORTHLAND KEEPS THE LOG O WOOD
There was plenty to celebrate in Te Tai Tokerau, with Northland crushing Waikato 34-17 to retain the Ranfurly Shield in Whangārei.
The Taniwha did much more than simply survive another Shield challenge.
A 17-point victory over Waikato underlined the confidence growing within Northland rugby and keeps one of provincial rugby’s greatest prizes in the north.
The Ranfurly Shield carries enormous history, but for Northland it also represents something happening right now — a team giving its supporters something significant to rally around.
The Log o Wood remains in Whangārei and the Taniwha are still roaring.
LAWSON BREAKS INTO TOP 10 IN MADRID
Kiwi Formula One driver Liam Lawson continues to make the most of his latest opportunity with Red Bull.
Lawson qualified inside the top 10 for the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, with Lando Norris taking pole.
The result follows a strong start to the weekend for Lawson, who had already finished 10th in both Friday practice sessions on the new Madring circuit.
Lawson is again driving for Red Bull while Isack Hadjar continues his recovery from injury, giving the New Zealander another opportunity to demonstrate what he can deliver in the senior team’s car.
The new 5.4-kilometre, 22-corner Madrid circuit combines street and purpose-built sections, with limited overtaking opportunities placing even greater importance on qualifying.
A top-10 starting position gives Lawson a genuine opportunity to fight for another strong result.
WHITE SOX SUFFER WORLD CUP HEARTBREAKER
New Zealand’s White Sox have suffered a nail-biting defeat in their opening match of the Women’s Softball World Cup.
It was a frustrating way to begin the international campaign, with New Zealand pushing the contest deep before falling short.
The narrow margin will nevertheless give the White Sox confidence that they can compete as their World Cup campaign continues.
In tournament softball there is little time to dwell on disappointment, and attention now turns quickly to their next opportunity.
BRONCOS END WARRIORS NRLW SEASON
There was more finals heartbreak for the Warriors organisation, with the Brisbane Broncos ending the Warriors NRLW season with a record victory.
The result brings the curtain down on the Warriors women’s campaign and provides a sobering measure of the gap between the developing side and one of the competition’s benchmark teams.
But the return and continued development of the Warriors women remains an important part of rugby league in Aotearoa.
The challenge now is turning experience into depth, development and a stronger platform for future seasons.
SPRINGBOKS TAKE SERIES 3-1 AS ALL BLACKS LEFT HURTING
The biggest blow of the weekend came in Baltimore, where South Africa completed a 3-1 series victory over the All Blacks.
It was a painful conclusion for New Zealand after a four-Test contest that had captured international attention and again underlined the intensity of rugby’s greatest rivalry.
All Blacks coach Dave Rennie was left deeply disappointed as the Springboks sealed the series.
The result will inevitably bring scrutiny over where the All Blacks stand against the world champions and what needs to change as New Zealand continues rebuilding towards the next Rugby World Cup cycle.
Losing one Test to South Africa hurts.
