A major New Zealand logistics company is entering a new era of ownership, with a group of iwi-backed investors joining forces to buy Cardinal and position the business for its next stage of growth.

Cardinal has been sold to Cardinal Logistics Holdings LP, a newly established investment entity backed by a consortium of long-term New Zealand investors, including several iwi commercial organisations.

The Māori investors include Raukawa Iwi Development Limited, representing Raukawa interests centred in South Waikato, and Pare Hauraki Asset Holdings Limited, representing iwi from Hauraki and the Coromandel.

Also involved are Te Ātiawa o Te Waka-a-Māui Holdings LP, Tama Asset Holding Company Limited and Rangitāne Holdings Limited, representing iwi interests from Te Tauihu at the top of Te Waipounamu.

New Zealand family investment offices are also part of the consortium.

Together, the investors have around $1 billion in combined equity backing, with the group taking a long-term approach to investing in and growing successful New Zealand companies.

The deal represents another significant move by iwi commercial entities beyond traditional investment areas such as property, farming and fisheries and into sophisticated national infrastructure, technology and supply-chain businesses.

Cardinal provides logistics, supply-chain and distribution services and has operated in New Zealand for 35 years.

The company has invested heavily in automation and technology, recently completing Stage Two of its fully automated distribution centre at Drury.

Once fully fitted out, Cardinal says the facility will become the largest third-party logistics automation site in the Southern Hemisphere.

The transaction also marks the end of an era for founder Tony Gorton, who is exiting the company completely 35 years after establishing Cardinal.

Chief executive Brendon Furness will remain at the helm alongside the existing management team, with the new owners backing continued investment in people, safety, customer service, technology, automation and growth.

The investor consortium was brought together by Koau Capital Partners, which specialises in investment and management services for iwi and Māori entities.

Koau says Cardinal represents an Aotearoa innovation success story with significant potential for continued expansion, while the investors behind the purchase are approaching the business as long-term owners rather than seeking a short-term return.
For the iwi organisations involved, the investment represents more than acquiring another financial asset.

It demonstrates the increasing scale and sophistication of the Māori economy, with iwi capital being pooled alongside other New Zealand investors to gain exposure to logistics, automation, technology and the infrastructure underpinning the country’s supply chains.

Cardinal Logistics Holdings says its investors share a long-term commitment to supporting successful New Zealand businesses, with approximately $1 billion of combined equity behind the consortium.

The deal puts Māori capital firmly inside one of the sectors that keeps Aotearoa’s economy moving — and signals another step in the evolution of iwi investment from settlement assets towards diversified, intergenerational commercial ownership.
