Former Defence Minister and Carterton mayor Ron Mark is returning to electoral politics, with New Zealand First confirming the veteran campaigner will stand for the party at the 2026 general election.
The announcement brings one of the party’s most experienced figures back onto the campaign trail as New Zealand First continues unveiling candidates ahead of polling day. The party has been recruiting a mixture of former MPs, public figures and first-time candidates as it seeks to increase its representation in Parliament.
Mark has had a long association with New Zealand First, first entering Parliament in 1996 and later returning as a list MP in 2014.
He served as Minister of Defence and Minister for Veterans during the Labour–New Zealand First coalition government between 2017 and 2020. His political career has also included local government leadership, serving as mayor of Carterton before returning to Parliament.
Known for his direct speaking style and strong interest in defence, veterans’ affairs, policing and regional communities, Mark brings extensive parliamentary and campaigning experience to the party’s 2026 team.
His return comes as New Zealand First pushes to expand its vote beyond its current support base, arguing that experience and political stability will be essential during a period of international insecurity, economic pressure and growing public distrust in established institutions.
The party has presented the 2026 election as the next stage of a campaign that began following its return to Parliament in 2023. Its leadership has made clear it wants a stronger mandate and greater influence over the direction of the next government.
