Ten people have now been arrested and charged following a violent fight outside the Palmerston North District Court earlier this month, with Police warning that violence at court facilities will not be tolerated.
The arrests follow an extensive investigation into the incident, which unfolded at the public entrance to the courthouse on 16 July at around 10am. Police say a 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with fighting in a public place and theft from a person. He is due to reappear in Palmerston North District Court on 18 August.
Following further inquiries, investigators have now arrested nine additional people, bringing the total number charged to ten.
The additional defendants, aged between 15 and 33, are scheduled to appear before the Palmerston North District Court throughout August. They face a range of charges, including fighting in a public place, assault with intent to injure, and criminal damage.
Police say identifying those allegedly involved required a significant investigative effort, with officers reviewing CCTV footage and carrying out inquiries to locate those believed to have participated in the altercation.
Manawatū Acting Area Commander Inspector Phil Ward said the investigation team had worked tirelessly to identify and hold those allegedly responsible to account, describing the arrests as the result of determined investigative work.
Police also praised the actions of court security staff and responding officers, who intervened to separate those involved in the fight.
According to Police, their swift response prevented the confrontation from escalating further and reduced the risk of more serious injuries to members of the public, court staff and those attending proceedings that day.
The incident has renewed attention on safety within New Zealand’s court precincts, where judges, lawyers, victims, witnesses, defendants and members of the public regularly gather.
While security screening has become increasingly common at many courthouses, violent incidents continue to present challenges for court staff and Police responsible for maintaining order within the justice system.
Police say violence in and around court facilities places everyone present at unnecessary risk and diverts resources away from other policing priorities.
They have reiterated that those responsible for disorderly or violent behaviour will be pursued and prosecuted.
Authorities are continuing to encourage anyone with information relating to violent offending or other criminal activity to contact Police. Anyone witnessing an emergency should call 111, while non-urgent information can be reported through 105 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
