New Zealanders struggling to pay their power bills this winter are being encouraged to seek help early, with the launch of an updated online resource bringing together practical advice, financial support options and information about consumer rights.
The Electricity Retailers’ and Generators’ Association of New Zealand (ERGANZ) has refreshed the EnergyMate website to make it easier for households experiencing energy hardship to access assistance in one place. The resource provides guidance on reducing electricity use, understanding available support and connecting with community and government services.
The updated website encourages people who are having difficulty paying their electricity bills to contact their power retailer as soon as possible. Electricity companies are required to work with customers experiencing payment difficulties and may be able to offer flexible payment arrangements or hardship support before debts escalate.
The online hub also directs households to wider sources of assistance, including budgeting and financial mentoring services, government support programmes and community organisations that can help families manage rising living costs.
The launch comes as many households continue to face pressure from higher electricity prices and broader cost-of-living challenges. Energy hardship can force families to choose between heating their homes and meeting other essential expenses, increasing the risk of cold, damp homes and poorer health outcomes.
The resource also includes information on improving household energy efficiency, helping consumers reduce power use while maintaining warm, healthy homes. It complements existing initiatives such as EECA’s energy efficiency programmes and other government efforts aimed at reducing energy hardship.
ERGANZ says making information easier to find is an important step in ensuring households know what support is available before they reach crisis point.
As winter continues, the organisation is encouraging anyone experiencing financial pressure to seek assistance early rather than waiting until disconnection becomes a possibility.
