The Government has announced a package of support for flood-hit farmers in Kaikōura, as the region begins the difficult task of recovering from one of the most damaging weather events to strike the district in recent years.
Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson confirmed that Government agencies are working alongside local authorities, industry organisations and farming groups to help restore damaged farms, repair critical infrastructure and support affected rural communities.
The flooding left farms inundated, fences destroyed, slips blocking access tracks and widespread damage to pasture and stock infrastructure after days of relentless rain forced the declaration of a local state of emergency in Kaikōura. More than 130 residents were evacuated as rivers burst their banks and major transport routes, including State Highway 1, were disrupted.
The Government says immediate assistance will focus on helping farmers meet urgent recovery needs while coordinating longer-term support to rebuild rural businesses and strengthen community resilience. Agencies including the Ministry for Primary Industries will work closely with Federated Farmers and Rural Support Trusts to assess damage and direct resources where they are needed most.
Environment Canterbury has also issued guidance for landowners beginning the clean-up, outlining what emergency work can proceed immediately while reminding farmers of environmental rules covering waterways, earthworks, effluent management and stock welfare during the recovery process.
The latest assistance builds on previous Government support provided to farming communities affected by severe weather events earlier this year and reflects the significant impact repeated storms are having on rural New Zealand.
For many Kaikōura farmers, recovery is expected to take months, with damaged land, washed-out fencing and compromised infrastructure likely to affect productivity well beyond winter. Officials say ongoing collaboration between government agencies, local councils and rural organisations will be essential to ensuring farming families can rebuild and prepare for future extreme weather events.
