Nominations are now officially open for the 19th National Waiata Māori Music Awards, with artists, songwriters, producers and supporters invited to recognise the people shaping the future of Māori music ahead of this year’s ceremony in Hastings.
The awards will be held on Friday, 25 September 2026, at the Toi Toi HB Arts & Events Centre, continuing a tradition that has celebrated excellence in Māori music for nearly two decades.
Over the past 19 years, the Waiata Māori Music Awards have become one of Aotearoa’s premier events recognising Māori artists, composers, performers, producers and cultural leaders whose work strengthens te reo Māori and celebrates Māori identity through music.
The 2026 theme, Ake Ake Kia Kaha E! (Forever and Ever, Be Strong!), reflects the enduring resilience, strength and cultural pride of Māori communities. Organisers say the theme celebrates the achievements of the past while encouraging future generations to continue protecting and promoting te reo Māori, tikanga and Māori artistic expression.
This year’s awards also pay tribute to the late Sir Bom Gillies and the soldiers of the 28th Māori Battalion, recognising their courage, leadership and lifelong commitment to their people. Their legacy serves as a reminder that today’s cultural achievements are built on the sacrifices and determination of those who came before.
Executive Director Ellison Huata says the awards remain an important platform for celebrating Māori creativity and recognising the role music plays in preserving language, sharing stories and strengthening cultural identity throughout Aotearoa.
Nominations are now being accepted across a wide range of categories, recognising excellence in songwriting, performance, music production, language revitalisation and outstanding contributions to Māori music.
The annual awards ceremony will feature performances from leading Māori artists alongside recognition for both established performers and emerging talent, showcasing the diversity and strength of contemporary Māori music.
Organisers are encouraging artists, record labels, producers and members of the public to submit nominations before entries close on 3 July 2026.
