A major gold mining proposal in Central Otago has hit a delay, with the fast-track application for the Bendigo-Ophir Gold Project paused while the company provides more information.

The proposed mine, backed by Santana Minerals through Matakanui Gold, has been one of the most closely watched projects under the Government’s fast-track approvals system.

The project would involve a large-scale open-cast gold mine near Bendigo, north of Cromwell, and has drawn strong interest from mining supporters, environmental groups, local residents and mana whenua.

The fast-track panel has raised concerns about gaps in the application, including information needed to assess environmental effects, water impacts, wetlands, groundwater modelling and proposed mitigation measures.

The pause means the consent process cannot move forward until the panel receives the extra material it needs to properly consider the application.

Supporters of the mine say it could bring jobs, investment and export earnings to the region, with Santana previously promoting the project as a major economic opportunity for Central Otago.

But opponents remain concerned about the impact on landscapes, waterways, biodiversity, cultural values and the long-term future of the area.

Ngāi Tahu and local rūnaka have also raised issues around consultation and Treaty obligations, adding to wider debate over whether fast-track laws provide enough space for community and mana whenua voices.

The delay comes as the Government continues to defend fast-track approvals as a way to speed up major infrastructure and development projects.

But the Bendigo-Ophir pause shows even fast-track projects can face serious scrutiny when key environmental and cultural information is missing.

A final decision on the gold mine is now expected later in the year.
