South Auckland whānau are being invited to come together to celebrate Matariki at a special community event hosted by the Manukau Urban Māori Authority (MUMA) at Ngā Whare Waatea Marae.

The free event, taking place on Friday 3 July, promises a day of entertainment, cultural performances and community connection as MUMA marks the Māori New Year with a celebration that reflects the values of whanaungatanga, remembrance and renewal.

Running from 10am until 3pm, the event will feature a diverse line-up of performers and cultural groups, bringing together music, kapa haka and Pacific performances in the heart of South Auckland.

Matariki has become one of the most important dates on the national calendar, providing an opportunity for communities to reflect on the past year, honour loved ones who have passed, celebrate the present and look ahead to the future.

For Māori, the rising of the Matariki star cluster signals the beginning of a new year and serves as a time to reconnect with whānau, culture and the natural world.

The MUMA celebration aims to create a welcoming environment where people of all ages can gather and share in the spirit of Matariki.

The event programme features performances from kapa haka and Polynesian cultural groups, showcasing the rich diversity and talent within the South Auckland community.

Popular performers TJ and Huri are set to take the stage, alongside one of Aotearoa’s most respected music icons, Annie Crummer.

Known for her powerful voice and decades-long contribution to New Zealand music, Crummer’s appearance is expected to be a highlight of the day.

Organisers say the entertainment programme has been designed to celebrate both Māori and Pacific cultures while creating an enjoyable and inclusive atmosphere for the wider community.

MUMA has long played a significant role in supporting Māori whānau through education, housing, health, social services and community development initiatives.

The Matariki event continues that commitment by creating opportunities for people to connect, celebrate and strengthen community bonds.

Community events such as these have become increasingly important as Matariki grows into a national celebration that brings together people from all backgrounds.

For many families, the day offers an opportunity to spend time together while learning more about the significance of the Māori New Year.
