A historic connection to one of Aotearoa’s most famous cultural figures has been rekindled with the arrival of the vessel Sophia on Lake Rotomahana, marking a new chapter for visitors to Waimangu Volcanic Valley.
Representatives from Tūhourangi, Te Puia and Waimangu gathered on Friday for a karakia and blessing ceremony before the boat’s inaugural sailing, celebrating both a significant milestone and the enduring legacy of Guide Sophia Hinerangi.
The 12-metre vessel now forms part of the Waimangu visitor experience, offering manuhiri a new way to explore the geothermal landscape and hear the stories that shaped the region’s history.
The boat’s arrival carries deep cultural significance. Its journey to Lake Rotomahana mirrored the path travelled by Guide Sophia more than 140 years ago, passing through some of the most important locations connected to the history of the Pink and White Terraces and the people who guided visitors through the area before the Tarawera eruption of 1886.
The stories of Otukapuarangi and Te Tarata, known internationally as the Pink and White Terraces and once described as the eighth wonder of the world, remain central to the Waimangu experience. Those histories continue to be shared through cultural storytelling and interpretation led by Tūhourangi descendants and local historians.
Tūhourangi historian Rangitihi Pene recounted how Guide Sophia would escort visitors across the terraces, leading them to hidden geothermal features before ending their journeys at the famed Pink Terrace baths.
The new cruise experience combines those cultural narratives with the valley’s unique geological story. Visitors taking part in the Full Waimangu Experience can walk through the geothermal valley before boarding Sophia for a 45-minute cruise across Lake Rotomahana.
Designed to improve accessibility and comfort throughout the year, the vessel features two levels, premium outdoor viewing decks, heating, enclosed seating and capacity for up to 60 passengers.
For those who attended the blessing ceremony, the occasion represented more than the launch of a tourism attraction. It was a moment that connected past and present, honouring the legacy of Guide Sophia while creating new opportunities for future generations to experience the rich history, culture and geothermal wonders of the region.
