The streets of Katikati are expected to be awash with blue next month as locals lace up their running shoes and come together for a major community event aimed at promoting health, wellbeing and local connection.

Residents are being encouraged to dress in blue and take part in the Hume Pack-N-Cool 5km and 10km Fun Run and Walk, scheduled for Saturday, July 4, with a backup date of July 18 should weather conditions require a postponement. The event is free to enter and welcomes participants of all ages and fitness levels.

Organisers say the event has quickly become a highlight on the Katikati community calendar, bringing together families, schools, businesses and community groups for a day focused on participation rather than competition. The initiative aims to encourage people to get active while celebrating the strong community spirit that defines the Western Bay of Plenty township.

This year’s event will feature both 5km and 10km options, allowing walkers, runners and recreational participants to choose a distance that suits their abilities. Organisers hope the sea of blue outfits will create a vibrant and memorable atmosphere throughout the town.

Community events continue to play an important role in bringing people together across the Bay of Plenty, with Katikati recognised for its strong volunteer culture and active events programme. Local leaders say initiatives like the Fun Run and Walk help strengthen social connections while promoting healthy lifestyles.

The event is expected to attract participants from across the wider region, adding to a growing calendar of community-focused activities that celebrate local identity and encourage people to get involved.
