New Zealand’s top 3×3 basketball players are gearing up for a high-energy campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with both the men’s and women’s teams preparing to take on some of the world’s best in one of the fastest-growing sports on the international stage.
The New Zealand Olympic Committee has confirmed a talented group of athletes for the Games, including Birmingham 2022 representative Ella Fotu, who returns for her second Commonwealth Games appearance after helping New Zealand finish fourth in the inaugural 3×3 tournament.
3×3 basketball has rapidly become one of the most exciting events on the Commonwealth Games programme. Played on a half-court with just three players per side and a 12-second shot clock, the sport is known for its speed, athleticism and non-stop action.
Both the 3×3 Tall Blacks and 3×3 Tall Ferns secured qualification for Glasgow 2026 earlier this year, marking another significant milestone for the sport in Aotearoa. Basketball New Zealand says the achievement reflects the growth and increasing strength of the game across the country.
The Glasgow Games will provide an important opportunity for New Zealand’s athletes to push for a place on the podium while continuing to build momentum towards future international competitions, including Olympic qualification campaigns.
Competition will take place at Glasgow’s SEC Centre from 24 to 29 July, with twelve nations contesting both the men’s and women’s tournaments. The event is expected to attract strong support and global attention as 3×3 basketball continues its rise as a major international sport.
New Zealand’s squads feature a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, reflecting the depth that has developed within the national programme over recent years. The success of junior and under-23 teams has helped create a strong pathway for athletes progressing to the international stage.
With Glasgow now just weeks away, the focus turns to final preparations as New Zealand’s 3×3 stars look to light up the court and bring home Commonwealth Games success.
