New Zealand’s tourism recovery continues to gather pace, with the latest international travel figures showing a strong increase in overseas visitor arrivals and renewed confidence across the tourism and hospitality sector. Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston says the figures are encouraging for businesses and communities that rely on tourism.
Stats NZ data shows 358,900 international visitors arrived in New Zealand during March 2026, an increase of 15.1 percent compared with the same month last year. Annual figures show 3.63 million international visitors arrived in the year ending March 2026, up 9.2 percent on the previous year and approaching pre-pandemic levels.
Australia remains New Zealand’s largest source of visitors, with more than 138,000 arrivals recorded in March, representing growth of 21 percent year-on-year. Visitor numbers from the United States and China also increased significantly, reflecting strengthening demand across key international markets.
The growth is being welcomed by the tourism sector, which remains New Zealand’s second-largest export earner. Industry leaders say increased visitor numbers translate directly into spending at accommodation providers, restaurants, transport operators, retail businesses and tourism attractions throughout the country.
Recent tourism data also shows New Zealand is edging closer to a major recovery milestone. International visitor numbers and spending have both returned to around 94 percent of pre-Covid levels, with Australian and American visitor numbers now exceeding those recorded before the pandemic.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment reports that visitor spending has recovered alongside arrival numbers, while Tourism New Zealand continues to pursue ambitious targets to restore annual international visitor arrivals to near-record levels by the end of the year.
The latest figures are expected to provide a boost for regional economies across Aotearoa, where tourism plays a significant role in supporting jobs and local businesses. Industry analysts say sustained growth in visitor arrivals will be critical to maintaining economic momentum and strengthening the wider recovery of the tourism sector.
With international travel continuing to rebound and key markets showing strong demand, New Zealand’s tourism industry appears to be firmly on the path toward a full recovery.
