Three more promising young New Zealand athletes have earned selection for the 2026 World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, strengthening an already talented Kiwi squad set to compete on the global stage this August.
Athletics New Zealand announced the additional selections as preparations continue for the prestigious championships, which will bring together the world’s best emerging track and field athletes at the renowned Hayward Field in Eugene from August 5-9.
The latest additions build on an initial squad of 12 athletes named earlier this year, reflecting the depth of talent emerging through New Zealand’s athletics pathways.
The World Athletics U20 Championships are widely regarded as a key stepping stone for future elite athletes, with many Olympic and world champions first making their mark at the event during their junior careers.
Among those already selected are several athletes who have been making headlines domestically and internationally, including middle-distance sensation Sam Ruthe, who recently broke John Walker’s long-standing New Zealand mile record and currently sits among the world’s leading under-20 athletes in the 1500 metres.
The team also includes experienced competitors such as Boh Ritchie and Madeleine Waddell, both of whom represented New Zealand at the previous World U20 Championships and have continued to deliver strong performances at senior level.
Athletics New Zealand says the championships provide invaluable international experience for young athletes and serve as an important pathway toward future Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Olympic representation.
New Zealand has a proud history at junior world championships, with athletes such as Eliza McCartney using the event as a launching pad for future international success.
The Eugene championships will be staged at one of the world’s most iconic athletics venues, which previously hosted the World Athletics Championships in 2022 and has become synonymous with elite track and field competition.
Athletics officials say the strength of this year’s squad highlights the growing depth of young athletic talent across Aotearoa and provides an encouraging glimpse into the future of New Zealand athletics.
With final team selections still to be completed in the coming weeks, competition for places remains intense as athletes chase qualifying standards and the opportunity to wear the silver fern on the world stage.
