Te Pāti Māori has announced respected Ngātiwai leader Aperahama Edwards as its candidate for Te Tai Tokerau ahead of the 2026 General Election, setting up what is expected to be a major contest for the influential northern Māori electorate.

The party says Edwards brings decades of experience across kaupapa Māori advocacy, te reo Māori revitalisation, ocean conservation, regional development and the defence of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Te Pāti Māori leadership says his selection reflects the party’s focus on strengthening unapologetic Māori representation in Parliament as political tensions continue around Te Tiriti, Māori rights and constitutional issues.

Edwards has long been involved in kaupapa across Te Tai Tokerau and nationally, including environmental protection initiatives and advocacy connected to He Whakaputanga and Māori sovereignty issues.

Co-leaders Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi described Edwards as a leader grounded in service, whakapapa and commitment to whānau, hapū and iwi throughout the north.

The party also highlighted Edwards’ visible role during the Hīkoi mō Te Tiriti, which saw tens of thousands march in opposition to Government policies seen by many Māori as undermining Treaty relationships and Indigenous rights.

Edwards says he is standing because Te Tai Tokerau needs strong representation willing to defend Te Tiriti and advocate for issues affecting Māori communities, including housing, language revitalisation, rangatahi development, environmental protection and economic wellbeing.

Te Tai Tokerau remains one of the country’s most politically significant Māori electorates and has historically been a stronghold for influential Māori political figures.

The electorate is currently held by Labour MP Kelvin Davis, who reclaimed the seat in 2023 after previously losing it to Te Pāti Māori’s Mariameno Kapa-Kingi during shifting political tides across the Māori electorates.

Te Pāti Māori says the 2026 election will be a defining moment for Aotearoa, with the party intending to contest all seven Māori seats as part of a wider push to expand Māori political influence and challenge the current coalition Government.

Political analysts expect Te Tiriti, co-governance, Māori development and constitutional issues to remain central themes leading into the next election campaign.

Edwards’ candidacy is likely to energise political debate in Te Tai Tokerau, where issues such as poverty, housing shortages, infrastructure, health inequities and environmental protection remain major concerns for whānau across the region.

The announcement signals Te Pāti Māori is preparing early for an aggressive campaign strategy as it seeks to strengthen its presence both inside Parliament and within Māori communities nationwide.
