Green Party candidate Kahurangi Carter has officially announced a campaign to win the Christchurch Central electorate, marking what she says is an ambitious but achievable push for the Greens to secure the seat for the first time.
Carter says the campaign comes at a time of growing change in Christchurch and increasing support for Green politics across the city.
The Christchurch-based activist and community advocate says winning the electorate would bring greater resources and staffing support to help strengthen local communities and expand grassroots initiatives across the region.
Her candidacy follows the announcement that the current Labour electorate MP will stand down at the next election, opening up what is expected to become a highly contested race.
Carter also confirmed she has secured the number 11 ranking on the Green Party list as the party aims to increase its parliamentary representation.
The campaign is expected to focus heavily on community wellbeing, climate action, social equity and cost-of-living pressures, with Carter positioning collective action and local organising as central themes of her message.
Known for her strong community engagement and activism in Ōtautahi, Carter says Christchurch has transformed significantly in recent years and believes the city is ready for a stronger Green political presence.
The Green Party has traditionally relied heavily on party vote support nationwide, with electorate victories largely concentrated in Auckland and Wellington. A Christchurch Central win would mark a major breakthrough for the party in the South Island.
Carter’s announcement has already generated strong support online, with volunteers and supporters mobilising early ahead of the next general election campaign.
Political observers say Christchurch Central could become one of the most closely watched urban electorates in the country as parties begin positioning themselves for the upcoming election.
