A complaint has been lodged with the Ombudsman over allegations the Prime Minister’s Office withheld official information from the public.
The complaint follows concerns raised about the handling of Official Information Act requests linked to government communications and decision-making processes.
Under New Zealand’s Official Information Act, government agencies are required to release information unless there is a lawful reason to withhold it. Complaints about delays or refusals can be investigated independently by the Ombudsman.
The issue has reignited debate around government transparency and accountability, with scrutiny intensifying over how ministerial offices respond to requests for official documents and correspondence.
The Ombudsman has powers to investigate whether agencies and ministers have acted appropriately under the law and can recommend information be released if withholding is found to be unjustified.
The Prime Minister’s Office has not publicly indicated whether it will contest the complaint, while political opponents are calling for greater openness around decision-making inside government.
The case is expected to add further pressure on the Government as public interest grows around transparency and access to official information.
