One of Aotearoa’s most iconic surf breaks is preparing to welcome the world, with Raglan’s legendary Manu Bay set to make its debut on the international Championship Tour stage.
The world-class surfing location at Whāingaroa/Raglan will host elite surfers from around the globe, marking a major milestone for New Zealand surfing and placing Manu Bay firmly in the international spotlight.
Known internationally for its long left-hand point break, Manu Bay has long been regarded as one of the finest surf breaks in the world and was famously featured in the classic surf film The Endless Summer.
The arrival of the Championship Tour is expected to deliver major economic and tourism benefits for the Waikato region while showcasing the natural beauty and surfing culture of Whāingaroa to a global audience.
Raglan has a rich surfing history and deep cultural significance, with the area known traditionally as Whāingaroa — meaning “the long pursuit.” The coastline has become synonymous with surfing excellence, attracting wave riders from across the world for decades.
Manu Bay, also known traditionally as Waikeri, is renowned for its powerful and consistent waves, with rides that can stretch for hundreds of metres along the rocky point break.
Surfing advocates say hosting a major international event at Manu Bay is recognition of the quality of New Zealand’s surf culture and coastal environments.
The event is also expected to inspire the next generation of Kiwi surfers, including rangatahi Māori already making their mark in national and international competitions.
Local businesses and tourism operators are preparing for an influx of visitors as the Championship Tour brings international media exposure and increased visitor numbers to the region.
Organisers say the event will celebrate not only surfing, but also the unique culture, community, and mana of Whāingaroa.
For many locals, the world-stage debut represents a proud moment for a community long regarded as the spiritual home of New Zealand surfing.
