State Highway 6 through the Upper Buller Gorge remains closed this morning after a large slip blocked the road following heavy rain on the West Coast.
The closure affects the section of SH6 between the intersections with State Highways 65 and 69, near the Eight Mile Creek Bridge.
Transport officials say the slip includes large fallen trees and debris covering the roadway, making the route unsafe for motorists.
Road crews have been working since the early hours of the morning to assess the damage and begin clearing operations.
A detour has been put in place for drivers travelling through the area.
Westbound traffic is being directed along State Highway 65 to Springs Junction, then onto State Highway 7 before reconnecting with State Highway 69 at Reefton and returning to SH6.
The reverse route applies for eastbound traffic.
Motorists are being advised to allow extra travel time and to drive carefully due to wet conditions and increased traffic on the alternative routes.
The slip follows periods of significant rainfall across the West Coast, with saturated ground conditions increasing the risk of slips and fallen trees throughout the region.
Officials say an update is expected later this morning as crews work to reopen at least one lane to traffic if conditions allow.
Drivers are being encouraged to check for the latest road updates before travelling through the area.
