Air New Zealand is warning passengers to expect further flight cancellations as the airline forecasts major financial losses linked to soaring fuel costs and ongoing pressures across the global aviation industry.

The airline says rising jet fuel prices, aircraft availability issues and continued operational challenges are forcing it to reduce services across parts of its network.

Air New Zealand has already cancelled more than 1,100 flights this year, with tens of thousands of passengers affected by schedule changes and reduced services.

Many of the disruptions have impacted regional and domestic routes, raising concerns about connectivity for smaller communities and the wider tourism sector.

The airline says the current pressures are being driven largely by a global jet fuel crisis, intensified by instability in international oil markets and disruptions to global fuel supply routes.

Industry analysts say aviation fuel costs have risen dramatically over recent months, placing heavy financial strain on airlines worldwide.

Air New Zealand has also faced continuing fleet challenges, including delays to aircraft deliveries and maintenance issues affecting parts of its long-haul fleet.

The airline has signalled that further schedule adjustments may be needed to manage operating costs and maintain financial stability through the remainder of 2026.

Passengers are being encouraged to regularly check flight updates and allow flexibility around travel plans as disruptions continue.

The airline’s financial warning comes despite recovering international visitor numbers and growing demand for travel across New Zealand and the Pacific.

Tourism operators say ongoing cancellations and uncertainty could affect regional economies heavily reliant on domestic and international visitors, particularly during key travel periods.

Air New Zealand remains New Zealand’s national carrier and one of the country’s largest employers, operating domestic and international services across the Pacific, Asia and North America.

The wider aviation industry is also grappling with increasing costs, staff shortages and geopolitical instability affecting fuel prices and air travel demand globally.
