Waatea News can confirm that speculation suggesting Oriini Kaipara is leaving Te Pāti Māori is inaccurate.

Earlier this evening, another media network published claims indicating Kaipara was preparing to depart the party amid ongoing political tensions and the emergence of a new Te Tai Tokerau political movement.

However, after speaking with multiple well-placed sources, Waatea News has verified the claims are false.

Sources confirmed to Waatea that Kaipara remains committed to Te Pāti Māori and continues to be part of the party’s preparations heading into the 2026 election campaign.

The speculation emerged during a period of heightened scrutiny surrounding Te Pāti Māori following Mariameno Kapa-Kingi’s announcement that she intends to contest the next election under the newly formed Te Tai Tokerau Party.

“I want to correct the narrative that is being reported about me this evening by media. I confirm that the comments claiming to be mine are not. I did not and have not spoken with any reporter on this matter. I want to acknowledge Mariameno Kapa-Kingi and her decision to start a new party. I wish her and all whānau in Te Tai Tokerau well. To be clear, I remain a committed member of Te Pāti Māori, committed to Tāmaki Makaurau, and committed to making this a one term government. My focus remains on supporting rangatahi into safe, stable homes as well as jobs, better access for tamariki to Māori education, protecting our taiao from irreversible damage and further breaches of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, which remains under attack. I will make no further comment on the matter”

Te Pāti Māori has recently reaffirmed its intention to contest all seven Māori electorates and confirmed several candidates already preparing for the campaign, including Kaipara.

Waatea understands there is frustration within sections of the party over ongoing public speculation and reporting surrounding internal dynamics, but sources insist claims regarding Kaipara’s departure are without foundation.

The party continues to publicly maintain its focus remains on kaupapa Māori priorities including tino rangatiratanga, Te Tiriti justice, mana motuhake and removing the current Government at the next election.

Waatea News can categorically state that, based on verified information from multiple sources, Oriini Kaipara is not leaving Te Pāti Māori.
