A major infrastructure milestone has been reached in the central North Island with the official opening of the new Omori Water Treatment Plant, designed to provide safer and more resilient drinking water for communities around Lake Taupō.

The new facility will supply drinking water to Omori, Kuratau, and Pukawa, replacing ageing infrastructure and significantly upgrading water treatment capabilities in the isolated communities.

The $8.3 million project includes advanced membrane filtration technology, UV treatment systems, and upgraded monitoring equipment aimed at meeting New Zealand’s stricter drinking water standards under Taumata Arowai regulations.

Taupō District Council says the plant has also been built to withstand major natural disasters, with high seismic engineering standards and a permanent backup generator designed to maintain operations during power outages.

The new treatment plant is capable of producing up to two million litres of drinking water each day, with room for future expansion as the surrounding communities continue to grow.

The opening marks another significant investment in regional water infrastructure as councils across Aotearoa face increasing pressure to modernise ageing water systems and comply with tighter environmental and public health standards.

Residents in the area have previously raised concerns about the taste and quality of local drinking water, issues council leaders say the new facility is expected to resolve. ()

The official opening ceremony was held at the site behind the Omori Community Hall and included a blessing, ribbon cutting, and community gathering.
