New youth-focused mental health and suicide prevention services are being rolled out in Te Tai Tokerau, aimed at supporting taitamariki experiencing acute distress and strengthening local prevention efforts.

The announcement includes investment in a dedicated Youth Acute Respite Service, designed to provide short-term support for young people facing serious mental health challenges. In addition, planning is underway for three Youth Suicide Prevention Coordination roles, which will work alongside existing services across the rohe.

The move follows ongoing concerns about youth suicide rates in Northland and the need for more targeted, accessible support for young people. Previous inquiries into youth suicide in the region highlighted gaps in services and called for stronger, locally grounded responses.

The new initiatives are expected to focus on delivering care that is culturally appropriate, community-based, and responsive to the realities faced by taitamariki and their whānau. There is also an emphasis on integrating these services with existing providers to ensure a more coordinated approach to mental health support.

Advocacy groups have consistently highlighted the importance of early intervention, access to services close to home, and approaches that reflect the lived experiences of young people. Broader social factors such as poverty, food insecurity, and family harm are also recognised as key drivers of mental health distress.

The rollout in Te Tai Tokerau is being seen as a step toward addressing long-standing gaps in youth mental health services, with a focus on prevention, support, and community-led solutions.

Work will continue to ensure the new services are shaped by the voices of taitamariki, alongside input from whānau, hapū, iwi, and local communities, with the aim of building systems that better support the wellbeing of young people across the region.
