A major flood protection upgrade has been completed near Ruawai, with a new floodgate delivering increased resilience for the Kaipara district against rising flood risks.

The Raupō G Canal floodgate marks a significant improvement to the wider drainage system in the area, designed to better manage water flow and reduce the risk of flooding across low-lying land. The project is expected to help safeguard highly productive horticultural land and critical infrastructure, including State Highway 12.

The new infrastructure also plays a key role in preventing saltwater from entering freshwater systems, an issue that can damage soil quality and reduce the productivity of farmland.

Ruawai sits within the Northern Wairoa agricultural delta, a region known for its fertile river flats and long history of farming. The area is particularly vulnerable to flooding due to its low elevation and proximity to tidal waterways, making flood protection a priority for both local communities and the wider economy.

The project involved installing modern flood control systems, including reinforced structures within the Awaroa River, and is part of a broader effort to strengthen climate resilience in Northland. It received government funding to support long-term infrastructure improvements in the region.

Alongside the floodgate, additional work is underway on stopbanks and other flood protection measures, aimed at improving the region’s ability to cope with extreme weather events and sea level rise.

The completion of the floodgate highlights ongoing collaboration between local authorities, central government, iwi, and community stakeholders to protect land, livelihoods, and transport links in one of Northland’s key food-producing regions.
