Shane Jones Signals Boost for Regions with Airlines and Energy Push

Regional development is back in focus, with Minister Shane Jones outlining new support for regional airlines and progress on major infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening local economies.

Speaking on Waatea, Jones pointed to the importance of maintaining reliable air connections for smaller communities, saying the latest funding is aimed at stabilising services and ensuring regions remain connected for business, health, and whānau travel.

The move comes as regional routes continue to face pressure from rising costs and reduced capacity, with concerns that isolated communities risk being left behind without targeted support.

Jones indicated the funding is designed to deliver practical improvements in the near term, with expectations that travellers will begin to see more consistent services and better access in the months ahead.

Attention is also turning to the West Coast, where a proposed hydro project is being fast-tracked as part of a broader push to improve energy resilience and regional self-sufficiency.

The project is expected to play a key role in strengthening electricity supply, while also creating jobs and supporting economic growth in the region.

Jones says fast-tracking is about cutting through delays and accelerating development timelines, particularly for infrastructure seen as critical to long-term resilience.

Beyond aviation and energy, the Minister signalled a wider pipeline of regional initiatives, with a focus on unlocking economic potential and supporting communities outside the main centres.

The updates highlight the Government’s continued emphasis on regional growth, with infrastructure and connectivity seen as central to lifting opportunities across the motu.
