Kia Hūkere te Hoe has returned to Wairau for the first time in 13 years, marking a major milestone as the largest kapa haka event ever held in Marlborough.
The Tauihu regional Matatini competition is bringing together hundreds of kaihaka and their whānau, celebrating the strength and growth of kapa haka across the rohe under the leadership of Te Tauihu Kapa Haka Inc.
Organisers say the event reflects the rapid rise of kapa haka in Te Tauihu, with more groups, stronger performers, and higher standards than ever before. That growth is expected to be on full display, with fierce competition across all age groups.
From tamariki to pākeke, teams will be competing for coveted spots at national stages including Te Mana Kuratahi and Te Matatini 2027. Judges will be looking for excellence not just in performance, but in storytelling, precision, unity, and the ability to connect deeply with kaupapa Māori.
The return to Wairau carries special significance for the region, reconnecting the event with its whakapapa and grounding it in the histories of Wairau, Waikawa and Waitohi.
For organisers and local communities, hosting the event is about more than competition. It is a celebration of identity, language, and culture, as well as an opportunity to bring people together and showcase the depth of talent within Te Tauihu.
With thousands expected to attend, the event is set to be a powerful display of mana, pride, and cultural excellence, reinforcing kapa haka as a vital expression of te ao Māori.
