A major step has been taken toward the future redevelopment of the former Hato Pētera College site on Auckland’s North Shore, with a formal process now underway to seek ideas for its revitalisation.

The Wāwahi Ara Board has opened a Preliminary Indication of Interest process, inviting organisations to submit early proposals for how the 12-hectare site in Northcote could be used in the future.

The move is part of a wider effort to restore the mauri of the historic site and ensure it continues to serve Māori communities and future generations.

Groups taking part in the process are being asked to put forward high-level concepts that align with the kaupapa of the whenua, including delivering strong community outcomes while reflecting the site’s Māori Catholic foundations.

The land has deep cultural and educational significance, with Hato Pētera College having a long history of supporting Māori education before its closure in 2018.

The Wāwahi Ara governance group, working alongside the Catholic Bishop of Auckland and Kāhui Kaumātua, is overseeing the process as part of a long-term plan to reshape the site.

Future possibilities for the whenua include education, community facilities, and other developments that uphold the original intent of the Crown grant while strengthening connections between Māori and the Catholic Church.

An online briefing is scheduled as part of the process, with interested organisations able to register and submit their ideas in the coming weeks.

The preliminary phase is expected to help shape the next stage of decision-making, as leaders work toward a long-term vision for one of Tāmaki Makaurau’s most historically significant Māori education sites.
