Labour has confirmed respected Māori leader Kingi Kiriona as its candidate for the Hauraki-Waikato electorate ahead of the 2026 general election.
Kiriona, who affiliates to Ngāti Ruanui, Ngā Rauru, Ngāti Apa, and Ngāti Kahungunu, brings a strong background in cultural leadership and public service to the role. His selection follows growing support from across the rohe and comes after receiving the blessing of Māori Queen Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po.
The appointment signals Labour’s focus on experienced leadership within Māori electorates, with Kiriona widely recognised for his work across key sectors including education, health, broadcasting, and infrastructure.
Currently serving as Deputy Chair of Te Māngai Pāho, Kiriona has played a significant role in advancing Māori broadcasting, following multiple terms as a board director of Whakaata Māori. He is also the founder of Māori education provider TupuOra and was appointed to the Waitangi Tribunal in early 2025.
His career began in journalism, before moving into governance and leadership roles focused on Māori development and empowerment. Alongside his professional work, Kiriona is deeply embedded in kaupapa Māori, including his involvement as a tutor for leading kapa haka group Te Iti Kahurangi.
His leadership journey has been shaped by a commitment to uplifting communities, particularly rangatahi, with a focus on building capability and creating pathways for future generations.
The Hauraki-Waikato seat is expected to be closely watched in the lead-up to the next election, with Kiriona’s candidacy adding momentum to Labour’s campaign in the Māori electorates.
