#hakinakina: Blues appoint Jason Holland as head coach from 2027
The Blues have confirmed a major long-term coaching appointment, naming Jason Holland as head coach from the 2027 Super Rugby season on a three-year deal.
Holland brings extensive experience across both domestic and international rugby, having held multiple coaching roles with the Hurricanes, including serving as head coach between 2020 and 2023. He has also operated at the highest level of the game as an assistant coach with the All Blacks.
Before transitioning into coaching, Holland built a strong playing career in New Zealand with Manawatū and Taranaki, before heading offshore where he made more than 100 appearances for Irish club Munster Rugby over nearly a decade.
Blues leadership says the appointment signals a clear intent to build long-term stability and success within the organisation. The club views Holland as a coach with both the technical expertise and leadership qualities required to guide a new era, particularly as the franchise continues to develop a strong core of established and emerging talent.
The timing of the announcement is also strategic, providing certainty for players, staff and supporters as the Blues look to maintain momentum in Super Rugby. The club has been building depth across its squad and sees Holland as a key figure in shaping its future direction.
Blues management has acknowledged that Holland remains committed to his current responsibilities with the Hurricanes and will continue in that role until his transition in 2027. The club has indicated it fully supports that commitment, reinforcing expectations around professionalism at the elite level.
For Holland, the move represents an opportunity to lead one of New Zealand rugby’s most storied franchises. He has signalled his enthusiasm for the role and the chance to contribute to the club’s legacy, while also emphasising his immediate focus on his current coaching duties.
The appointment positions the Blues to enter the next phase of Super Rugby with clarity around leadership, as they look to convert potential into sustained success in the seasons ahead.
