Tauranga City Council has launched a dedicated online information hub to keep the community informed about the aftermath of the Mauao landslide and the ongoing recovery efforts.

The new website brings together key documents, updates and resources related to the landslide that struck Mount Maunganui in January, providing a central place where residents, businesses and affected whānau can access the latest information.

The council says the site has been created in response to strong public interest in the event and aims to improve transparency by making official updates and reports easier to find. It includes information on safety measures, technical assessments, and support services available for those impacted by the disaster.

The landslide occurred on 22 January following intense rainfall during severe weather in the upper North Island. The slip struck the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park and surrounding area, causing significant damage and claiming six lives.

Since the disaster, Mauao has remained closed to the public while geotechnical experts continue to assess the stability of the hillside and determine the level of ongoing risk. Safety measures have included fencing around affected areas and restrictions to prevent people entering hazardous zones.

The online hub also outlines current closures and restrictions around the base of the mountain, including impacts on nearby facilities and surrounding coastal areas. Updates on road access, building assessments and maritime safety zones are also included.

Council officials say the website will continue to be updated as new information becomes available, including engineering assessments, recovery updates and the results of investigations linked to the landslide.

The initiative is intended to ensure the community has a reliable and accessible source of information as Tauranga continues to deal with the aftermath of one of the most significant natural disasters to strike the area in recent years.
