After months of major upgrades and safety work, Aorangi Stadium in Timaru has officially reopened to the public.
Seismic strengthening and important fire-system improvements at the much-loved community facility are now complete, meaning local sport and recreation staff and stadium users can once again access the building.

The reopening marks a key milestone in the $24.2 million Aorangi Park redevelopment project, led by the Timaru District Council. That broader work aims not only to strengthen the existing stadium, but also to build a new eight-court indoor sports stadium linked to the current facility – with upgraded amenities such as a gym, function rooms and improved changing spaces.

Deputy Mayor Scott Shannon and local leaders say the project will help ensure Aorangi Stadium remains a hub for sport, community events, and bigger regional gatherings for years to come.

While the redevelopment continues, with full completion expected in mid-2027, the reopening lets clubs, schools, and whānau return to the stadium for training and activities – a welcome boost for local recreation after portions of the facility were closed for safety upgrades.

This redevelopment has long been anticipated by the community. Preparatory works began in 2025, and the project has involved careful planning to balance the needs of sport users, big-event organisers and the wider Timaru public.

We’ll keep you updated on opening dates for new courts and other community facilities as they’re confirmed.
