The Pā whānau is back for season seven of Ahikāroa, the bilingual drama that follows the chaotic lives of urban rangatahi navigating love, loss, and identity.
The show has carved out its own lane, showcasing the cast’s unique sense of style and fashion while pushing boundaries in Māori storytelling.
Actress Awa Puna says she’s proud to be part of a cast telling the stories of young Māori, before anyone else can.
“You know, some sets are very like, What’s the word for it? Like, clinical or, like, extremely logical, and people, everyone stays in their own lane. But that is not at all what it’s like on Ahikāroa. Like you should, you should just see us. We always have, like, the best laugh, and it’s there’s something about the vibe that is just so warm. And I’m just reminded every day that I’m on that set, that this story is not, is not only about us, but it’s coming from us. And that’s like, that’s what I think is so important. It’s about, like, story sovereignty, and we’re telling these stories before someone else can tell them about us, and that’s why I think it’s such an important show,” says Puna.
